Preparing for the Big Day - A Guide to Settling in at Nursery

Starting nursery is a huge milestone for both children and parents. It’s a moment filled with excitement and new beginnings, but it’s completely normal to feel a little bit of anxiety about the transition. At Sunflower Smile, we understand that a smooth settling-in process is the key to a happy start.

Here are some of our top tips to help you and your little one feel confident and ready for this new adventure.

1. Talk About It (Early and Often!)

Children, even very young ones, understand more than we often give them credit for. Start talking about the nursery well before their first day. Use positive and encouraging language. You could say things like, “Soon you’re going to get to play with new friends at Sunflower Smile,” or “We’re going to have so much fun playing with all the new toys at nursery!”

It can also be helpful to read books about starting school or nursery. There are lots of wonderful stories that can help your child understand what to expect in a fun, gentle way.

2. Make It a Gradual Transition

At Sunflower Smile, we believe in a staggered settling-in period. This means we work with you to create a schedule that helps your child gradually get used to their new environment. It might start with a short visit where you stay with them, followed by a slightly longer session where you leave for a little while. This allows your child to build trust with their key person and feel comfortable in their new surroundings while knowing you’ll always come back.

3. Say a Quick, Confident Goodbye

When it’s time to say goodbye, a simple, cheerful farewell is best. It’s natural to feel emotional, but children can pick up on our feelings. A long, drawn-out goodbye can sometimes make the separation more difficult.

Give them a big hug and a kiss, say something positive like, “Have a wonderful time playing, I’ll be back to pick you up after snack time!” and then head out. Our staff are experts at providing comfort and distraction the moment you leave, and we’ll always keep you updated on how they’re doing.

4. Find a Familiar Comfort

Having a little piece of home at nursery can make a world of difference. Encourage your child to bring a special toy, a blanket, or a favourite book. This familiar item can provide a sense of comfort and security when they’re feeling overwhelmed or missing you. It’s a small but powerful way to bridge the gap between home and nursery.

5. Trust the Process (And Your Key Person!)

Your child will be assigned a dedicated key person who will be their main point of contact at the nursery. Their role is to get to know your child and your family, and to provide consistent care and reassurance. They will be there to offer a cuddle, engage them in a favourite activity, and help them settle in every day.

Remember, settling in isn’t always a linear process. Some days may be easier than others, and that’s okay. By working together, we can ensure your child feels safe, secure, and ready to learn and play.
