All Aboard the Reading Train: The Importance of Reading to Your Little One
At Sunflower Smile, one of our favourite times of the day is when we gather for a story. It’s a quiet moment that can be filled with big adventures. Reading to your child, whether it’s a colourful board book or a classic fairytale, is one of the most powerful and enjoyable things you can do for their development.
The benefits of reading go far beyond learning to recognise letters and words. It’s a key part of nurturing your child’s imagination, social skills, and emotional growth.
Why Reading Aloud is So Important
- It Builds Brains: When you read to your child, you’re helping their brain develop in incredible ways. They learn new vocabulary, improve their listening skills, and start to understand how stories are structured—all essential building blocks for future learning.
- It Nurtures a Love of Books: The earliest experiences with books shape a child’s relationship with them for a lifetime. When reading is a fun, positive, and shared activity, children learn to see books as sources of comfort, entertainment, and knowledge.
- It Strengthens Your Bond: The time you spend reading together is a special, one-on-one connection. The physical closeness, the sound of your voice, and the shared focus on a story all help to build a strong, loving bond between you and your child.
How to Make Reading a Daily Adventure
Making story time a habit doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few simple tips to make it a highlight of your day:
- Find Your Cosy Spot: Whether it’s a big chair, the living room rug, or tucked into bed, having a special reading place can make the activity feel extra special.
- Read with Expression: Don’t be afraid to use different voices for characters, make sound effects, or change the tone of your voice. This keeps your child engaged and helps them understand the emotions and personality of the characters.
- Let Them Be the Guide: Encourage your child to point at pictures, turn the pages, and talk about what they see. Ask them questions like, “What do you think is going to happen next?” This makes them an active participant in the story.
- Make it a Routine: Whether it’s a book before bed, a story after lunch, or a quick read in the morning, a regular routine helps children look forward to story time.
At Sunflower Smile, we incorporate reading throughout our day, from small group sessions to individual moments with our key persons. We’re on our own reading adventure and we can’t wait for your child to join in!
